From Xizhou to Changsha
Seven rooms, one habit. How a courtyard by Erhai Lake ended up on a rooftop 1,600 km east.
In 2016 we opened a room in Xizhou with no sign and no plan. It had an old wooden beam, a courtyard that caught the afternoon sun, and a kettle. That was the entire business model.
Over the next years the same room kept being rewritten: a room facing the lake, a room beside reeds, a small guesthouse, a small bar with a guitar, a place where people stop with bicycles. Each one was a different answer to the same question — where do people go when they decide to stop for a while?
In 2023 we asked that question somewhere completely different. Changsha, Yanghu, a rooftop above a young neighbourhood. No lake, no reeds, no Bai courtyard. We were nervous that the habit would not travel.
It did. Not because of the beans, and not because of the view. It travelled because the thing we actually serve is a pause, and a pause is portable.
We still write everything down. This site is that notebook, opened.

The hands behind the craft
We do not make the handcraft ourselves. We visit the people who do, and we pay before the piece exists.
